How to make a unicorn costume for kids
What you need
To make a unicorn horn, you will need:
- VELCRO® Brand Stick On for Fabrics
- Wide plastic headband
- A selection of coloured ribbon (in colours of your choice)
- Gold ribbon or paint for the horn
- An A4 piece of white card
- Fabric glue
- Flowers/stars/glitter to decorate (optional)
What to do
Unicorns are everywhere this year, making them the ultimate Halloween costume for those not afraid to get a little crafty. Never mind expensive accessories, everything you’ll need to be transformed into a magical unicorn can be found at home or purchased inexpensively from a craft shop.
Make a unicorn horn
To start making a unicorn horn for your DIY costume, lay your piece of card flat and select a corner. Then along each edge of your corner, mark 10cm length and draw a curve to join the two marks. Cut this out to create a flat cone shape. Now roll up the paper into a 3D cone and glue along the edge. And to make the horn look more magical, wrap gold ribbon around to create a spiral pattern or spray paint the whole horn gold.
Next step! Cut two 30cm lengths of ribbon (in any colour) and glue one end of each ribbon to the inside of your horn on the opposite side and let this dry. Then take your headband and drape your horn & ribbon creation over, so that the horn is sitting at the top of the headband and the ribbon covers the sides. Glue this all in place to secure the horn to the headband and trim any excess ribbon. This provides you with a sturdy base for your horn and also means you can add more decoration! Grab your flowers or cut-out stars and affix to the headband using some VELCRO® Brand Stick On For Fabrics. The oval shapes are perfect for securing your decorations discreetly.
Complete the look
Now to put the finishing touches on your homemade unicorn costume!
Go for a white leotard with white tights or a white top and leggings for the body of the unicorn. No need to buy anything new, take a look at what’s already in your wardrobe and get creative!
Ribbon will make the perfect unicorn tail. Simply gather together several pieces to reach from your waist to your knees, curling the end with scissors. Tie a knot at one end and pin to your leotard or leggings.
Now all that’s left to do are the finishing touches; why not add some shimmery make up to your eyes?
Top tip: use pastel eyeshadows and blend over your eyelids to create a rainbow of colour.
Finally, glitter is a must (remember a unicorn can never be too sparkly!) and you can simply use Vaseline to apply the glitter to your face.
