How to make a DIY indoor herb garden

1. Gather your materials

First things first, gather what you need. You don't really need much to make an indoor herb garden - in fact, this is quite a low-cost DIY idea that, depending on the pots that you choose, can look pretty stylish with minimal effort. You will need:

  • Herb pots (with good drainage)
  • Herbs
  • Extra soil
  • VELCRO® Brand Heavy Duty Coins (Pick up the exact pack featured in this post in Poundland or pick up a similar pack in our online store).

2. Plant your herbs in their pots

Once you have everything you need, plant your herbs in their pots. It's important to make sure that the pots have good drainage but other than that, you can pick whichever pots best suit your kitchen.

Certain herbs are better suited to indoor growth than others so we'd recommend choosing from: basil, bay, chives, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, tarragon and thyme. Make sure you plant each herb in a separate pot.

3. Choose a well-lit spot

Now to choose where to mount your DIY herb garden. As a rule of thumb, herbs need around 6 hours of daylight per day, so it's important to mount your herb garden in a well-lit spot (near a south-facing window would be ideal).

4. Mount the pots on the wall with VELCRO® Brand Heavy Duty Coins

Next, it's time to mount your herb pots on the wall. The quickest and easiest way to do this is with VELCRO® Brand Heavy Duty Coins. You won't need nails, screws or a drill for this - just stick the pots to the wall and the strong adhesive on the back of the coins will hold them securely in place.

They stick to a range of materials including wood, tile, brick and plasterboard so you have the flexibility to put your herb garden wherever you want. Each coin can hold up to 2kg but if your pots are particularly heavy like ours, we'd recommend using two coins per pot.

5. Water slowly and infrequently

The key to a successful indoor herb garden is not to over-water it.  You should let the soil dry out somewhat in between watering and as a rule of thumb, if the soil is dry about two inches below the top, it's time to water it.

Make sure you water your herbs slowly so that the water doesn't just drain straight out of the pot; water slowly to give the soil chance to absorb it.
